A young monk died and another is in a serious condition after they were washed away by strong currents while bathing with at least 30 other junior monks at sea in Seruwila, Trincomalee this evening.

According to the police the junior monks from the Natandiya Pirivena were visiting a Temple at Seruwila and had gone for a sea bath when the mishap took place.

Navy divers who were called in to rescue the two monks who were washed away by the strong currents recovered one body and rescued another monk. He was transferred to the Dambulla hospital from the Serunuwara hospital in a serious condition.  The Seruwila police are investigating the incident.
